Group Fertility, IVF and Loss Support Circle Meetings

What does a support group look like?
A support group sounds intimidating because most people’s perception or fear is about talking in front of a large group.  You are more than welcome to join a meeting to listen and learn because there is no pressure to talk. However the groups are small and  there is always an opportunity to share your story or ask questions.  A support group is usually informal and educational. It is usually held at specific times and meetings are on-going.

Who Facilitates the Support Group?

When looking to attend a support group it is important to know who is facilitating. A Counsellor who has experienced infertility first hand is critical. He/She may be able to add insight to discussions from experience and be resouceful to educated participants. If you are interested in starting a support group and need resources please contact Hipss for a comprehensive manual with group hand-outs and tips  on where to hold a meeting and how to market the group.

Why join a support group?

Support groups offer a way to connect with others that are going through a similar experience. Often couples feel isolated from family and friends. They feel alone and not part of any group or circle. It is hard to figure out where you belong because you are not engaged, newlywed, pregnant or parents. A support group brings individuals together to form new friendships and connections. Here are a list of some of the benefits of attending a support group:

  • Learn how to increase your fertility
  • An outlet for emotional release with others who understand and empathize
  • Learn how to cope with the everyday challenges of Infertility and Loss
  • Discussions and hand-outs include topics about: Self-esteem, Grief  & Loss, Fertililty treatment education, sexuality/romance, marriage communication, obsessive thoughts, anger management, relaxation techniques, perfectionism, anxiety, depression, forgiveness, trust, and complimentary medicine/therapies.
  • Learn ways to increase your fertility and ask questions regarding therapies
  • Feel support especially when you do not have any from family and friends
  • Gain insights and wisdom to make informed decisions about treatment
  • A place to be yourself and not ‘act like everything is ok’ in your life

Study’s show that women who seek emotional help during infertility feel less anxious and more receptive to treatments therby increasing pregnancy rates. Please RSVP to attend any support group.  The group is informal and confidential. Fertilitea and fertility friendly snacks are provided along with helpful handouts on important topics.
